Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a religious organization?
No. FISH, Harbor Interfaith's first program, was started by a volunteer group supported by the local faith communities. In 1987 FISH merged with Harbor Interfaith and became incorporated. Today Harbor Interfaith has many volunteers from all faiths and religious denominations. Harbor Interfaith is committed to serving those in need regardless of their religious affiliations.

Are you a government agency?
No. Harbor Interfaith is a non-profit agency. We do receive funding from government sources, such as federal, state, county and city.

Where do you get your funding?
Harbor Interfaith's funding is very diversified. We receive funds from individuals/families, foundations, service organizations, social clubs, faith organizations, and of course government entities.

Besides shelter, what other services do you provide?
Harbor Interfaith offers a comprehensive network of services designed to help the homeless and working poor regain their independence and move on to a better life. We not only provide shelter to homeless families, but we provide food, advocacy services, counseling, training, transitional housing, job placement, and support services. We have a collaborative relationship with Little Company of Mary, Tzu Chi Foundation, and UCLA Julestein who donate medical, dental and vision services.

What does FISH stand for?
The word FISH is not an acronym. The meaning for the word FISH actually comes from a saying: "If you give someone a fish, they can eat for a day, but if you show them how to fish, they can eat for a lifetime."

Do you have to be a U.S. citizen to be enrolled in HIS programs?
Yes and No. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to receive food through our FISH program. However, for our other services you must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. We are committed to providing the best services to homeless and low-income families. If a person(s) does not qualify for our services we still offer referrals to other social service agencies.

Do you assist non-English speaking participants?
Yes. At all of our sites we have staff to assist in several languages. We also have access to a hotline that provides translation services.

Yes. However, you must be declared legally emancipated in order to qualify.
